Edinburgh, Scotland
Hawksmoor St Andrew Square — the first in Scotland — occupies a Grade A listed former Royal Bank of Scotland building from the 1930s. Designed by Macaulay Sinclair, the scheme works in deference to the Neoclassical fabric, preserving or reproducing key elements such as mouldings, joinery and spatial hierarchy. Historic photographs informed details like the cast-iron stair and balcony, while the private dining room takes its name from glass artist Sadie McLellan, author of the original glazing. To meet the project’s heritage requirements, Macaulay Sinclair commissioned a traditional antique oak parquet floor — specified to sit authentically within the period envelope.
The main hall is gently broken down with a central island bar and wine room for more intimate dining. Limestone columns have been painstakingly restored and can now be appreciated up close from a new mezzanine. Reclaimed vintage furniture, repurposed doors and bespoke lights using original Holophane glass further reinforce the building’s layered authenticity.
